Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara
Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara or commonly known as the Kelaniya Temple is considered to be one of the prestigious Buddhist education institute and religious places in Sri Lanka. Found within the suburb of Kelaniya in Colombo, this is another temple that reflects the history and religiosity of the country and hence, offers a perfect place to visit for the locals as well as the foreigners.
Historical Significance
The Kelaniya Temple itself has a history of more than two thousand, two hundred and fifty years. The historic significance of this temple is that the Buddha himself is reported to have visited this temple during his third and the final visit to Sri Lanka. Historians have it on record that in the ancient past the Buddha delivered his sermons to a congregation in this area, thereby declaring it a sacred ground for construction of religious edifice. This visit is celebrated by the institution of the Religious processional, the Duruthu perahera which takes place every January, and is well patronised by thousand of the devotees and tourists
