Polonnaruwa Ancient City

Polonnaruwa, located in the heart of Sri Lanka, stands as a testament to the island nation’s rich cultural heritage and architectural prowess. Once the thriving capital of medieval Sri Lanka, this ancient city boasts a wealth of archaeological treasures amidst lush greenery and serene lakes.

Historical Significance: Polonnaruwa rose to prominence in the 11th century AD, becoming the second capital of the island after the decline of Anuradhapura. Under the rule of King Parakramabahu I, it flourished as a center of commerce, religion, and culture, adorned with magnificent palaces, temples, and reservoirs that showcased the ingenuity of ancient Sinhalese civilization.

Architectural Marvels: Visitors to Polonnaruwa are greeted by a series of impressive ruins that reflect the city’s grandeur during its zenith. The Royal Palace complex, with its intricately carved stone walls and imposing structures, offers a glimpse into the opulence of the ruling monarchs. Nearby, the Gal Vihara, a rock temple adorned with colossal Buddha statues carved into the granite rock face, stands as a masterpiece of Sinhalese Buddhist artistry.

Minneriya National Park

Nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, Minneriya National Park beckons with its breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity. Renowned for its spectacular annual gathering of elephants, known as “The Gathering,” the park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Spanning over 8,800 hectares, Minneriya is dominated by the picturesque Minneriya Tank, a 3rd-century reservoir built by King Mahasen. This ancient reservoir not only sustains the park’s diverse ecosystems but also serves as a vital watering hole during dry seasons, drawing hundreds of Asian elephants along with numerous bird species, amphibians, and reptiles.
