Safari at Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu National Park is a renowned wildlife sanctuary located in the northwest region of Sri Lanka. It is the largest and oldest national park in the country, spanning approximately 1,317 square kilometers of diverse terrain. The park is famous for its unique landscape characterized by numerous “villus” (natural lakes or water bodies), which give the park its name – “Wilpattu” literally means “land of lakes” in Sinhala.

The park is particularly known for its population of Sri Lankan leopards, which are considered one of the park’s most iconic inhabitants. Other wildlife found in Wilpattu includes Asian elephants, Sri Lankan sloth bears, various deer species like spotted deer and sambar, water buffalo, and numerous bird species.

Wilpattu has significant historical and ecological importance. It was established as a national park in 1938 and is located in the North Western Province, close to the town of Anuradhapura. The park’s diverse ecosystem includes a mix of forests, grasslands, and wetlands, making it a crucial habitat for many endemic and endangered species.

Unlike some other national parks in Sri Lanka that are more frequently visited, Wilpattu offers a more pristine and less crowded wildlife experience, making it attractive for nature enthusiasts and wildlife photographers seeking a more authentic safari experience.
